About Shnat Sherut 50 Plus

What is Shnat Sherut 50 Plus?

Shnat Sherut 50 Plus is a pioneering volunteer program that places experienced professional adults aged 50 and over into year-long service roles within Israeli communities facing significant challenges. We currently work in Merchavim, Eshkol, Sha’ar HaNegev and the city of Ofakim in the Gaza Envelope and will start a new group in the Matte Asher region in Israel’s North this September. Volunteers live and work in underserved areas, contributing their professional skills to support education, healthcare, social services, and community resilience.

Who runs the program?

The program is run by the charity Elul in close partnership with regional and local councils, and supported by US Federations, foundations and private donors in Israel and overseas.

Is this a full-time commitment?

Yes. Volunteers commit to living in the host community and working in meaningful placements 24 hours per week, for one full year.

Where do volunteers serve?

Three groups of approximately 20 volunteers are currently placed in the Gaza Envelope and Northern Israel, including regions such as Ofakim, Eshkol, Merhavim, Sha’ar HaNegev, Adi Negev. From September 2025, we will have a new group of 20 starting in Israel’s northern region next to the Lebanese border in the area of Matte Asher, Western Galilee. Placement locations are based on local need and council requests.

What kinds of roles do volunteers fill?

Volunteers take on high-impact roles in schools, clinics, welfare departments, community centers, rehabilitation facilities, and youth services just to name a few. Roles are matched to their professional backgrounds and the priorities of the host council.

Who is eligible to volunteer?

Those aged 50+ with a background in relevant professional fields such as education, social work, trauma relief, or community development and a willingness to live in the host community for a year are invited to apply. A strong sense of commitment and teamwork is essential.

Do volunteers receive financial compensation?

This is a volunteer program. However, all housing costs are covered by the host council. In some cases, travel stipends or other small allowances may be available, depending on local resources.

Is training provided?

Yes. Volunteers receive orientation and ongoing training throughout the year. They are also supported by professional facilitators and coordinators who run group workshops every week.

Is this program religious or political?

No. Shnat Sherut 50 Plus is a civic, nonpartisan initiative focused on strengthening Israeli society by connecting seasoned adults with meaningful service.

Can international volunteers apply?

Currently, most volunteers are Israeli. However, we are exploring pathways for participation by Jewish adults from overseas who wish to serve in Israel for a year. Please contact us for more information.

What makes this program different from other volunteer opportunities?

Shnat Sherut 50 Plus is unique in its depth of commitment, the professionalism of its volunteers, and its partnership model with local councils. Volunteers are not visitors. They become part of the community, bringing not just help but hope and presence in a time of need.

How can I apply to be a volunteer?
